Real recognise real: the significance of Sir Elton John being a Young Thug fan

Young Thug is this era’s polarising figure as a musician, as Sir Elton John once was in his time.

Eccentric, and indeed, unconventional. “Thugger” has had one of the best years of any hip-hop artist, releasing four mixtapes, as well as being in headlines for comparatively varied reasons, in doing so, he staked his claim in the current hip-hop scene, and proved that he is a force to be reckoned with. In one way or another, Young Thug has caught the attention of many a hip-hop advocates with his unique and rather exclusive style which nonetheless distinguishes him from virtually everyone else in the scene right now. Ineffable humming, cooing, and excessive onomatopoeia with varied levels of intonations,is a short description of the manner of his delivery. Along with hypnotising and outré beats by some of the most prominent producers in the genre such as London on da Track and Metro Boomin’ (which he made a collaborative album with, titled Metro Thuggin), Young Thug has an oeuvre consisting of seemingly endless amounts of bangers. Another notable characteristic that could be picked out from the entity that is Young Thug is his work ethic as an artist. Having released four mixtapes this year alone, Thugger has 13 mixtapes released in total, with at least four more scheduled to release early 2016, along with his debut album Hy!£UN35 (pronounced as Hi-Tunes). Young Thug provided an insight on how he goes about writing his songs in a recent interview by Dazed Magazine in which his distinctive and unparalleled hubris and personality was exhibited.

He goes on to say “I just do it bar for bar. I did a song in eight minutes. I thought everybody could write a song that fast. But working with a lot of them, they don’t. Wayne and Drake, it takes them so long to do a song. I understand why, because they want it to be perfect. But I think I can do a perfect song in ten minutes. I did ‘Danny Glover’ in eight minutes. ‘Stoner’ took me almost an hour.”

“Young Thug is good for the music industry, he’s here to stay and he’s not going anywhere anytime soon.”

Gifted, relentless, and a true workhorse. The consistency and unlikeliness of Young Thug’s work ethic and how he goes about in writing his content just means that there will evidently be more Young Thug coming in the future. Whether people like it or not, his relentless work ethic and intermittent releases is appreciated in hip-hop, a far cry from numerous – most – mainstream artists releasing content periodically to say the least. Supplementary to his music, Young Thug I also known for his bizarre and distinctive (again, to say the least) fashion sense and appearance. With his very distinguishable peroxide ingrained dreads and facial tattoos and piercings as a start, Young Thug’s fondness of women’s clothing is one of his main distinguishing factors as an artist in today’s conformative and trend-based industry and culture.

Needless to say, in ways more than one, Young Thug is good for the music industry, he’s here to stay and he’s not going anywhere anytime soon. And If his 20115 run is indicative of anything, the world better brace themselves for Thugger. There is simply nobody else in the genre that comes close to Young Thug in the genre, in terms of individuality.

Another person who is very fond of individuality amongst artists, is the great Sir Elton John, who you could say was in the same boat as Young Thug in his prime days as a musician by being the polarising figure in his genre. He was known to don some of the most unique and bizarre appearances, along with fresh and innovative music, as well as being one of the most high-profile gay personalities in music. Sir Elton John, is one of the pioneers who spearheaded the notion of individuality of artist, and is very much and advocate of the said trait.

This evidently worked in his favour as he is considered to be one of the most influential artists of all time with a glistening career and oeuvre, and most notably, career longevity that very few could boast. He is indeed, one of the few artists from his era that are still relevant in the current music scene, and his opinion is still very much regarded highly.

One of his latest co-signs is none other than Young Thug, in which he goes as far as to mention him in the same breath as the late, great John Lennon, one of the most prevalent, influential and well-known, to say the least, musicians of all-time.

In an interview with Noisey, Sir Elton John revealed his fondness of the artist “I heard a [Young Thug] track on Beats 1 and I loved it so much.”

“I love all of that, it’s unexpected.” He added.

Sir Elton John, despite being an artist from the rock and pop genre, is an advocate of hip-hop, revealing in a 2014 Rolling Stones interview that he wants to make hip-hop records, along with featuring on Kanye West’s track “All of the Lights”.

Every prominent artist in the industry exemplifies originality to some degree, whether it is their music, conduct, or personality.

Sir Elton John exhibits no shortage of his enthusiasm of Young Thug’s originality and idiosyncrasy. Two physiognomies current hopeful hip-hop artists arguably lack as a collective. Young Thug provides an abundance of that. It is clear, through backlash and slander in social media, that not everyone is a fan of Young Thug. Insults were directed towards his delivery of bars, his appearance, and even his sexuality. These are also the particular reasons why Young Thug is where he is now; no one makes music, dresses, and conduct themselves in the same manner as Thugger.

Every prominent artist in the industry exemplifies originality to some degree, whether it is their music, conduct, or personality. Young thug is seemingly overflowing with originality that you can’t help but look in his direction and acknowledge it; whether in a positive, or negative light is relative to the preference of the individual. In the genre of hip-hop, it is important to note that no one style is for everyone as hip-hop is rich in diversity, a platform of celebrating originality and innovation.
